Discussion: What is a seminal work?

Seminal works typically report a major breakthrough or insight into a topic.  These articles report on studies that change our understanding of a topic or describe a new research method.  Together, seminal articles form the "canon" of works critical to understanding a topic.  When writing a literature review, it is essential you include seminal works on your topic.
