Africana Studies Research Guide

This guide will help you locate Africana Studies resources including books, articles, primary sources (like speeches, memoirs, diaries, photos, art), and other web sites.  These resources cover many Africana Studies topics including: the transatlantic slave trade, biographies, antebellum slavery in the South, African history, contemporary black culture, women's history, the civil rights movement, political groups like the Black Panther Party, and African countries & cultures.  If you have questions, use the Ask Us! window at right to chat with a librarian.

    Search Tips

    • Brainstorm search terms! Ex: You might think your topic is child soldiers in armies, but the databases could include that topic under any of the following subjects: Soldiers. Armed Forces, Military Personnel, War, or Civil War
    • Search in a specific field! Select a specific field from the drop-down menus often found to the right of the search boxes, such as Location, Geographic Terms, Subject, or Abstract. It WILL help narrow down your search results.
    • Limit by population of interest!  Ex: Women, Children, Soldiers, Refugees, War crimes, Military Officers, etc.
